Invention Media, a Canadian digital publisher with 15 years of online experience, is looking for an experienced tech editor or journalist for a new business and technology digital publication, of international scope, devoted to electronic tablets and how they enhance people’s work and daily life. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the News Editor will belong to a core editorial group that will research, discover and create the best ways of using the exciting new tablet platforms to convey useful information and insights to a demanding and influential global audience.

Job description
• Write and edit business and technology news articles for tablet newsmagazine, web site and e-mail newsletter
• During an initial three-month development phase, contribute to concept, product, templates and testing for new media product
• Develop and nurture a worldwide network of freelance correspondents
• Identify reliable news sources; establish and nurture relationships with key contact people in the industry
• Find story ideas, evaluate story proposals and assign topics to interns and freelancers
• Draft a list of industry events and assign coverage
• Manage main media twitter feed
• Assess audience engagement with continuous traffic stats and interact with audience via email, commenting tools and/or social media
• Attend industry conferences and events
• Act as spokesperson and tablet industry reference

Key competencies
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Excellent editorial judgment and timely sense of initiative
• Flexibility to work in a start-up environment, with staff, contributors and contacts scattered around the globe
• Sense of balance between strict requirements of enterprise-grade content and need to interest, entertain and engage audience
• Knowledge of technology industry, and particularly of mobile, tablet and app industry and economy
• Working knowledge of web editorial (CMS), picture and video editing and management software tools
• Knowledge of foreign culture and fluency in other languages would be an advantage

Experience
• Minimum of two years in technology journalism
• Experience in editing position (editor; managing, executive or news editor; section or bureau chief or equivalent) a plus
• Past experience in newspaper, newswire or major news website/blog a plus
• Work experience with online communities would be an asset

Education
• University-level education. Must include courses in Journalism.

Location
• Must be located in San Francisco Bay area or in New York City area.

• Collaborate with developer/designer on layout production
• Assess audience engagement and interact with audience via email, commenting tools and/or social media
• Write or commission and edit occasional in-depth analysis reports
• Attend industry conferences and events
• Act as spokesperson and tablet industry reference
