Do you enjoy working with high school students on activism and advocacy project? Are you outgoing? Are you motivational? Do you enjoy public speaking? Then this job is for you!

RSCG is seeking a Youth Action Assistant who is motivated, creative, and energetic to work directly with youth of high-school organizations and their advisors with the objective of making schools in St. Louis adopt and implement 100% tobacco-free policies (Including events and sports games). This position will work exclusively with youth and after school groups in St. Louis County. While the Youth Action Assistant will work with youth directly, most communications will occur on the Internet, phone, texting, etc. Leadership experience as a member or coordinator within a high school or college organization (such as student government, DECA, FBLA, community service groups, or any other after school group) is required. Any experience focused on activism or advocacy efforts is preferred. This position is ideal for an individual who is interested in a career in positive social change with a focus on youth engagement (youth engaged to lead social change projects). The Youth Action Assistant will be trained on RSCG's Outcome-Oriented Youth Engagement (OOYE) model and will be expected to address youth engagement and action in a manner consistent to the model. This position is made available by a federal contract that ends on February 28, 2011.

The Youth Action Assistant would be responsible for:

  • Motivating, guiding, and providing technical assistance for high school students to plan and execute projects in their schools or communities that support specific campaigns. A significant component of youth communications will occur virtually (Internet, phone, etc.) because youth are from different high schools throughout St. Louis county, including Bayless High School, Brentwood High School, and Clayton High School as well as four private high schools in Council Districts 1, 2, 3, and/or 4;
  • Training youth to lead projects against tobacco use;
  • Maintaining regular communication with youth via Internet, phone, and on-site visits;
  • Coordinating youth projects with adult advisors from school- and community-based clubs and organizations
  • Attending and managing on-site youth events to support campaigns;
  • Conducting off-site dynamic educational and motivational trainings for high school youth to jumpstart their activism efforts;
  • Reporting daily to a supervisor based in Alexandria, VA.

A comprehensive training would be provided to the selected candidate. The training is paid for by RSCG and may be conducted locally or at RSCG's Alexandria, VA or Albuquerque, NM offices.

About Evolvement
This position will serve a youth-led movement called Evolvement. Evolvement is a multi-state movement for high-school students. Currently, Evolvement is active in New Mexico, Nevada and Missouri with a primary focus on fighting tobacco use. Evolvement members educate the public and present a call to action with specific tobacco control campaigns. Evolvement does not focus on traditional health messages, but rather on social justice issues, consumer advocacy and local public health policy.

Evolvement recruits new members annually through a Mini-Grants program where school- and community-based organizations throughout St. Louis County apply for the available Mini-Grants. Recipients receive $1,200 in unrestricted funds and promote Evolvement amongst their youth. Once trained, youth become official members with exclusive access to the members only website where they sign-up for projects. The Youth Action Assistant will train youth and guide youth in their project planning and implementation. At any given time, the Youth Action Manager will provide assistance to at least 150 youth simultaneously over the Internet and phone. The Youth Action Manager will also keep Mini-Grant Advisors informed of progress and involve Advisors in youth project coordination when appropriate. Excellent time management and organizational skills are required.
