California remote job: Marketing Communications Manager, full-time job

Job Summary
Esalen Institute, the pioneering alternative education center dedicated to personal and social transformation, is currently seeking a full-time Marketing and Communications Manager to join our team. The position will be based at our town center in Carmel with frequent visits to our main campus in Big Sur, California. This position is responsible for marketing and communications for the organization as a whole, including all internal and external communications. In addition, the manager will be leading all revenue-generating marketing and advertising efforts in both fund development and public programming. The position will have significant responsibilities in branding, messaging and positioning in order to communicate Esalen’s mission to a broader audience and new markets. This position reports to the Director of Advancement.
Can work remotely with occasional visits to the Esalen Campus.

Responsibilities
• Support the strategic plan by actively engaging in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and providing hands on implementation of all marketing and communication efforts at Esalen.
• Act as the primary manager and liaise with consulting agencies including a web site developer and a catalog editor.
• Share personnel oversight of administrative support staff with Director of Advancement.
• Coordinate with consulting agency to conduct a branding audit and campaign that will inform and articulate Esalen’s positioning and messaging development to all internal and external audiences.
• Create plans for promotion of workshops that includes advertising, social media, e-marketing and other communications tactics to drive attendance and reach new audiences.
• Develop and implement overall marketing and advertising campaign through print advertising, direct mailings, website initiatives and other strategic efforts.
• Develop market research plan to understand and expand the Esalen demographic with special attention on creating inroads with a younger demographic.
• Manage the production and distribution of all print materials including the biannual catalog, direct mailings, in house signage, in-room print material, etc.
• Coordinate marketing support for capital campaign, planned giving, donor cultivation and donor communications.
• Develop, implement and manage web site.
• Develop an internal communications program to support disseminating information related to organizational change and development.
• Define marketing initiative outcomes. Track, measure and communicate results to management and across staff as appropriate.

Position Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree required in marketing, communications or journalism.
• Seven to ten years of demonstrated success in a similar marketing and communications role.
• Strong appreciation and understanding of Esalen’s mission and ability to capture that in all forms of communications.
• Experience managing the production of marketing materials including print catalogs, brochures and direct mailings. Excellent writing and editing skills across all types of documents.
• Strong experience in managing websites and other online marketing social media, electronic newsletters, email campaigns and viral marketing. Knowledge of emerging online and Internet technologies.
• Prior experience in conducting a brand audit and rollout preferred.
• Public relations experience with multi media channels.
• Familiar with and able to conduct research and testing methods including demographics, analytics and A/B testing.
• Solid understanding of data gathering and mail list planning.
• Clear communication and willingness to relate to others, to listen and hear concerns in a patient and supportive manner; effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Expert problem-solver able to accurately manage complex projects and respond to issues/opportunities in a timely manner.
• Independent work ethic to carry projects through to completion and implement solutions without constant supervision; ability and desire to explore and learn.
• Strong analytic capability, organizational skills, passion for details and ability to multi task and adapt to changing priorities.
• Community interest and involvement necessary to work, adapt, and thrive in Esalen’s unique professional and social environment.
• Experience working within the non-profit sector a strong plus.

Compensation
The pay for this position is commensurate with experience. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and paid time off.
